Here are the best ways to develop self-awareness

Here are the best ways to develop self-awarenessHere are the best ways to develop self-awarenessFBI agents who work undercover are given a series of psychological tests to determine their level of self awareness. Self awareness enables agents to predict their responses when confronted with unexpected situations that can accompany undercover work. The psychological tests were constructed and administered by the FBIs Behavioral Science Unit. I attended classes for a week as FBI instructors assessed me. The goal was to drill into me the importance of self awareness if I was to become a successful undercover agent.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreEverything we say and do can affect those around us. Self knowledge allows us to control ur reactions so we arent at the mercy of negative behavior patterns. Emotional responses operate below the level of ur conscious awareness- from a part o f our brain called the basal ganglia. If our initial emotional responses tend to be defensive or negative, we need to find ways to modify them. Before we can change an automated emotional response, however, we have to be aware that it exists We need self awareness.A high degree of self awareness requires a willingness to tolerate the discomfort of focusing on feelings that may be negative. It can takemental toughnessto move through that discomfort because the point is to move through and not wallow in it. Instead, self awareness invites you to develop a straightforward and honest understanding of what makes you tick. If you are self aware, you canpredict your reaction and take steps to control negative or unproductive emotions.Successful people understand why they do well, what motivates them, and which people and/or situations push their button. If you are self aware, you are far more likely to pursue the right opportunities, use your strengths, and keep your emotions from holding you back. It improves your ability to direct your life.He who knows others is wise. He who knows himself is enlightened- Lao TzuHere are the best way to develop self awareness1. Dont treat your emotions as either friends or enemiesIts far too simplistic, and childish, to divide your emotions into two piles good and bad. If you try to label them, you lose your ability to be aware of them.We tend to avoid bad emotions because we dont want them. We may feel ashamed to acknowledge a negative reaction. Good emotions are regarded as positive and something we want. We may not monitor them as we should because hey, all good emotions are friends, right? Unfortunately, the pursuit of positive emotions only can produce a hedonistic lifestyle thats not based in reality. The truth is we need both good and bad emotions to function as healthy human beings in this world. Dont label your emotion instead, become aware of each and every emotion but dont judge it. Observe it, let it run its course, and remind yourself that the feeling was there to help you understand something about yourself.Emotions can make you feelHappy because youve reached your goal.Sad because you lost something.Frustrated because your career has moved in a different direction.Excited because a new adventure is around the corner.Angry because youve been cheated. How to make it work for you Observe the emotion for what it is. Try to understand what your mind wants to tell you. If you dont judge your emotion, it will run its course and not take control of you.2. Understand your life storyPsychologists have begun to focus on a new field of research called narrative identity.Psychologist Dan McAdamsexplains that the stories we tell ourselves about our lives dont just shape our personalities- they are our personalities. Our narrative identify integrates our reconstructed past with our imagined future to provide us with purpose and direction in life. When we understand our lifes story, we begin to find redemptive me anings to the suffering and adversity weve faced in life in the past. When we confront lifes challenges, those redemptive meanings help to develop our self awareness. How to make it work for youLook at your early life story and identify the people, events, and experiences that had the greatest impact on you.In what situations do you find yourself a natural leader? Follower? How do you look at the setbacks in your life? What have they taught you? About yourself? About others?3.Learn what pushes your buttonsWe all have buttons that produce predictable reactions. When the right ones are pushed, we can scream, throw tantrums, or burn with anger. Knowing who, or what, pushes your buttons and how it happens is critical to developing the ability to take control of the situation. If you know where your buttons are and what triggers them, this understanding of yourself opens the door so you can manage your response. Youre no longer the victim of an uncontrollable situation. You will have the imp roved emotional intelligence that allows you the ability to control the outcome.Emotions often show up uninvited and unexpected but they serve an important purpose- theyre clues you need to pay attention to in order to fully understand yourself. How to make it work for youEven when the emotions are painful, you need to trace them back to their origin to understand their purpose. Pay attention to them, spend time looking for why this emotion surfaced at this time, who triggered it, and in what context?4. Re-evaluate your valuesMost people dienstgrad out of the chute when they get out of school. They get a job that sounds exciting and work hard to distinguish themselves from the rest of the pack. Theyre young and talented enough to nip at the heels of the older and more experienced folks ahead of them. As soon as the older folks start to flail and fall back, the younger crop runs over them and moves further up the ladder. We might start a family, buy a house, and dream of our future. In short, we do all the things that society tells us to do to pursue happiness. After a few years, however, two things happen to us we age, and we grow up.A new generation arrives on the scene, straight out of school, and full of energy. Now we are the older folks who feel the younger ones nip at our heels. We look over our shoulder to keep from being run over and a new sense of fear and desperation starts to creep in. If were not committed and passionate about our job, that downward trajectory is the price we pay for staying in a mediocre career that hasnt fed our soul. Some find success to be exactly what they expected and worked so hard to achieve. Their ich loves the victories and they never tire in their pursuit of more fame or money. There is always something they can do to make themselves happier and more admired. The celebration of self never tires for some.Others, however, find success doesnt always bring satisfaction. We yearn for for something more in life. This disruption c an be forced upon us, such as illness or losing a job, or it can be an emptiness we discover on our own. We realize that societys rules prepare us only for a life where success is measured by money and toys. Instead of things to inspire us, we look for relationships to fulfill us.How to make it work for you Self awareness provides you the ability to look deeper into yourself. Revisit your values on a regular basis and ask these questionsDoes your career go into the direction you want to?Does your job require you to do things with which you are not comfortable?Do your colleagues treat you the way you would like to be treated?Do you have enough time for your family?Does your current path lead to where you want to be in 2 years? This article originally appeared on LaRae Quy.You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will ersatzdarsteller your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

4 books that will are essential to learn leadership and management

4 books that will are essential to learn leadership and management 4 books that will are essential to learn leadership and management Examining the work of those who’ve gone before us is one of the most impactful ways to expand our own knowledge and understanding. We often think of great leaders as those who won wars or guided countries through troubled times. But there’s also much to learn from the people who oversaw someone of history’s greatest mega-management projects. From them, we learn the science of operacy  - how to get things done.It doesn’t matter if the project you’re working on involves four people or only lasts three months. You can still improve your abilities by learning about what it takes to organize and persevere on a massive scale.Personally, I look to four of the most significant management projects in U.S. history: the Apollo program, the Manhattan Project, the Panama Canal, and the Transcontinental Railroad. I recommend the following books as a starting point for anyone who wants to dive deep into the projects. Apollo by Charles Murray and Catherine Bly Cox [The Apollo program] The Making of the Atomic Bomb by Richard Rhodes [The Manhattan Project] The Path between the Seas by David McCullough [The Panama Canal] Nothing Like It In The World by Stephen Ambrose [The Transcontinental Railroad] Each of these projects were incredible, bold, and beautiful in their own way. But their leaders also had several common traits we can learn from.A taste for the future.Someone had to imagine each project before it existed. And they had nothing to base their imagination on, because the ideas were so new and different. Each project was initially underestimated, sometimes dramatically so.For instance, the first research for the Manhattan project was done at a few universities by a relatively small group of scientists. It ended up employing 130,000 Americans at a final cost of $2 billion. At the beginning of the Apollo program, the United States was incredibly inexperienced. “When John Kennedy went before Congress on May 25, 1961 and said we were going to the moon, our total flight experience was one 15-minute suborbital flight.” â€" Dr. John W. Logsdon, Director of the Center for International Space and Technology PolicyThe people involved in each project didn’t know what would be r equired, because there was nothing to compare it to. They were truly creating the future as they went along. An understanding of operacyAll of these projects required massive amounts of manpower. And everyone involved had to be motivated, organized, fed. Naturally, each of the projects had an overarching military aspect to them.Throughout history, militaries have really been the only organizations to continuously work at organizing, motivating, and deploying thousands of people at a time. They’ve studied how to operate at a large scale, because the consequences are often literally life or death. When I joined the Army, I was initially surprised by how much effort they put into the food. You may not picture the Army having great food, but the meals are surprisingly good. That’s because the organization knows how important food is to morale.Little things- things we take for granted- are often top priorities in the military. They even have mobile laundry platoons whose job is to wash clothes, even in remote war zones.“There isn’t anything that affects a person’s well-being more than those things which the Quartermaster Corps has to do…and one of the things that affects his daily life, his health and comfort, is the way his clothes are taken care of by the laundries.” â€" Edmund Gregory, Quartermaster General 1940-1946.It’s important to remember that even the grandest of schemes often comes down to execution on a granular level.Perseverance from leaders and workersThe leaders of these projects undertook them with pride, bordering on hubris.Laying railroad track across the country, splitting the atom, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific, putting a man on the moon- these all required a leader with confidence in their ability to get the job done. But confidence without perseverance would not have been enough. These achievements still required tremendous amounts of human willpower. Thousands of people died building the Panama Canal and Transcontinental Ra ilroad. Setbacks, scandals, old technology, and disease all had to be overcome.Accomplishing feats like this required both technical ingenuity and stamina. One without the other would never have sufficed.Communication between multiple groupsGreat leaders have an ability to communicate a vision and motivate their organization to achieve that vision. JFK’s “We choose to go to the moon” speech immediately comes to mind. But each project had someone at the helm who could communicate its importance, motivate people to push through difficulties, and accomplish the end goal. Most leaders today don’t need to use the high rhetoric of a sitting president. But language matters. Communication truly makes a difference in a leader’s ability to motivate people. There’s nothing more important that being able to communicate what you’re doing in a concise, memorable, and even poetic way.Acceptance of riskNo one knew that each of these projects could even be accomplished until the very end . In The Making of The Atomic Bomb, Rhodes makes it clear that the scientists themselves were never entirely sure the project would succeed- until the moment it did.Risk is inherent in any monumental undertaking.Good leaders understand that all they can do is take things step-by-step. NASA didn’t go to the moon all at once. They worked toward that goal for years, setting a series of milestones. Step 1: Fly to the moon. Step 2: Orbit the moon. Step 3: Land an unmanned aircraft on the moon. And so on. They knew failure was a possibility, but they accepted the risk and carried on regardless.A systemwide view.Building the Transcontinental Railroad wasn’t just about laying a certain amount of track. Building the Panama Canal didn’t just require moving a lot of dirt. Going to the moon and splitting atom weren’t accomplished by calculations alone. All of these projects only succeeded because their leaders took a systemwide view of the venture. The workers weren’t only battling the landscape in Panama, they were also battling yellow fever- a disease spread by mosquitoes. It was up to a U.S. Army captain named William Gorgas to create a strategy that eliminated mosquito breeding grounds, all while battling officials who incorrectly contended the disease was spread through other means. His eventual success, and the eradication of the disease, helped make the Panama Canal a reality.A successful project is never about one thing. The best leaders are able to take a systemwide view and account for many different variables. True leaders take time to learn about those who came before them. The lessons learned here may be at a much greater scale than anything you or I will ever undertake, but they still hold plenty of value for those who study them. This post was originally published on Quora.

6 quick tips for making and keeping your summer goals

6 quick tips for making and keeping your summer goals 6 quick tips for making and keeping your summer goals When I was talking about my June goal with one of my closest friends, he said, “There’s no way you’re going to be able to do that.” “Watch me,” I said. “I bet you 100 push-ups you won’t,” he said. “Deal.” And we shook on it.It’s officially June, which means summer is upon us.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! Most people I know think of this time of year as a time to day-drink by the pool, go to the beach, hang out on a boat (if you know someone with a boat), meet up with friends on rooftop bars, and so on. And while I certainly enjoy doing all those things, those activities actually aren’t the first things that come to mind when I think of summer. What I think of are  goals.More specifically, which goals I’d like to achieve by the time fall comes around (and winter shortly after). For as long as I can remember, this is how I’ve always treated my su mmers- going as far back as summer vacation in high school, and even middle school. Summer was my time to explore new video games and challenge myself to defeat bosses. Summer was my time to get better at playing hockey, or record songs in my bedroom closet. Summer has always been a time of embracing a new challenge, and then pushing myself to overcome that challenge in a condensed period of time. So, if you’re thinking about how you can make and keep your summer goals, here are 6 quick tips for you to run with. And don’t forget:  talking about your goals  won’t bring them to life. You’re going to have to work hard this summer to see your goals come to fruition.1. Set your intention for June, July, and August by writing it down somewhere you can see it on a daily basis.Telling yourself, “This summer, I’m going to…” isn’t enough.Instead, take an afternoon or an evening and really think about what you want project you want to get done, what skill you want to practice, w hat goal you want to achieve- and then write it down.Write it somewhere you can see it. Write it somewhere that’s part of your daily routine (like on your desk, or on your bathroom mirror). And then, taking a page out of one of my favorite books,  Think and Grow Rich, read that intention or that reminder you’ve written down out loud on a daily basis.Speak it into existence.2. Set monthly, weekly, and even daily goals for yourself to reach- and check-in with yourself as often as possible along the way.Truthfully, goal-setting is easy. It’s the accountability side of things people struggle with.Instead of thinking about your summer as one massive chunk of time (90 days), try to visualize your summer as 3 separate chapters (June, July, and August). Then, break each one of those chapters down into sub-chapters (Week 1, Week 2, Week 3, Week 4). And then within those sub-chapters, really internalize each day that makes up each one of those weeks (Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, Day 5, Da y 6, Day 7).Now, set micro-goals for each.Where do you want to be at the end of, say, June? And what goals do you need to achieve in order to get there? How can you break those goals down into weekly milestones? And how can you break each one of those milestones down into daily micro-milestones?The more you can help yourself see the next step in front of you (opposed to the entire 3-month journey), the more likely you are to remain consistent and connected to the process.3. Don’t talk about your goals to anyone except 1 or 2 people in your life who will help hold you accountable. When I was talking about my June goal with one of my closest friends, he said, “There’s no way you’re going to be able to do that.”“Watch me,” I said. “I’ve been putting this off for too long. I’m going to do it.”“I bet you 100 push-ups you won’t,” he said.“Deal.” And we shook on it.Now, why I even had that conversation with my friend in the first place was because I wanted hi m to help hold me accountable. I wanted him to ask me in a week, or two weeks, how things were going- and how close or far I was from achieving my goal. What I don’t recommend, however, is telling anyone and everyone in your life what your summer goals are. Why?Because science has actually proven that you’re more likely to achieve your goals if you keep them to yourself (there’s a terrific TED talk on the topic).4. Avoid making your summer goals the same types of goals you set all throughout the year.I find summer to be one of the most inspiring times of year. It’s a great time to allow yourself to create things you might not normally create- or make progress in directions you wouldn’t otherwise prioritize. For me, summer has always been about picking goals that are less directly correlated with professional success, and more about self-expression and long-term creativity. It’s my way of maintaining some sort of connection to that child-like feeling of “summer vacation,† where these 3 months don’t feel like the rest of the year.I’ve always been a big believer in routine changes and creative breaks, so treat your summer as a way of reconnecting with a different part of yourself. You’ll be thankful you did.5. Create a reading list that reinforces and inspires you in the same direction as your summer goals. One of the best ways to keep yourself engaged is to constantly feed yourself that same type of external material. For example, let’s say your summer goal is to finish writing your first (or second, or third) book. Well, then I would recommend you read other books within your same genre- to keep the ideas flowing, and inspire you to see it through to the end. I’d also recommend you listen to podcasts that touch on the same topics you’re writing about (to give you some added perspectives), and that you watch documentaries or Netflix shows that tackle similar themes. All these input sources will only add fuel to the fire.6. Choose how you spe nd your summertime wisely.Of course, all the above means nothing unless you deliberately make the time to work toward your goals. This is always the hardest part for people- saying “No” to the Saturday neighborhood festival, or the group of friends that wants to go to the beach. We hate feeling “left out.” We don’t always like the idea of staying home and working quietly, by ourselves. Sometimes, we even feel guilty for not being outside, for not being more social, for not X, Y, and Z.But these are the tough choices you’re going to have to make- if you want to end the summer with a big goal of yours completed and achieved.Choose wisely. This article first appeared on Minutes.  You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Interview Questions About Salary History

Interview Questions About Salary History Interview Questions About Salary History Sometimes during an interview, the subject of salary history comes up. It’s a good idea to be prepared to discuss salary during any interview, and to be familiar with what compensation to expect for the position. Your salary history may be of interest to your potential employer, and you should make sure you can discuss it in the most flattering way. Keep in mind that in some locations, but not all, employers are not supposed to ask job applicants their prior salary. Also, some employers have banned interview questions regarding salary history. If youre asked when you shouldnt be, youll need to decide what you want to share and how you should respond. The best place to start is by reviewing your salary history. Note any changes in your salary over the course of each job, including pay raises, bonuses, and other changes in your benefits. If you are unsure of the exact amount of your previous salaries, go back and check. Giving the wrong data to an interviewer can result in the job offer being revoked. If you have trouble remembering the exact numbers, write the information down, along with the dates for each pay change. You might even bring this sheet of paper to the interview for your reference. You also need to research the salary range for your target position, especially if it warrants higher compensation than your past jobs. Questions about salary history can easily transition into a discussion of your salary expectations. Be prepared to address any differences in your target job that would justify a higher salary and be ready to indicate how you are prepared to meet those challenges. How to Answer Make sure that what you tell the interviewer matches what you listed on your job application. Dont exaggerate or inflate your earnings. Many employers will check references and confirm your salary history prior to making a job offer. A discrepancy between what you reported and what the employer says could knock you out of contention for the position. Spending a little extra time verifying the numbers and writing them down can help you avoid making a mistake that could inadvertently cost you the job. Along with simply stating your starting and final salaries, it’s also a good idea to list any other benefits you received. These might include bonuses or other perks. Sharing these with the interviewer will demonstrate other ways your former employer recognized your worth. You might also note any big changes in responsibility that matched up with increases in salary. This will show that your former boss respected your work, and that you earned new opportunities. If you are moving from a traditionally lower paying industry like the non-profit sector to a higher paying corporate industry, be ready to point out the differences in pay for comparable functional areas. Finally, explain any inconsistencies in your salary. For example, if your salary decreased for any reason, explain why. Perhaps you switched to part-time work while raising a family, or your salary decreased while other forms of compensation (insurance, other benefits, etc.) increased. Show the interviewer that you were still a valued employee and that your compensation properly reflected the work that you did. Sample Answers My initial salary was $X, and my final salary was $Y. However, this does not take into account the six bonuses I received while working there. My initial salary was $X. Over the years, I took on more responsibilities, including managing my own team and running projects; these are the type of responsibilities I know you are hoping your ideal candidate can handle. Due to this increase in responsibility, my final salary was $Y.When I began working at the company as a full-time grant writer, my salary was $X. Over time, that was increased to $Y, in large part due to my successful record of receiving grants. When I became a part-time employee, my salary became $Z. However, I continued to receive annual bonuses and other benefits for my exceptional work. I was hired as the marketing director at Company A at the salary of  $Y. When I first started working for Company A, I supervised the introduction of a new cleaning product. Sales for the product exceeded expectations during both the first and second year, and I was rewarded with a raise to $Z, promotion to executive director of marketing, and an annual 10% bonus. Shortly thereafter, I started a family with the adoption of my twins, and decided to downshift my career for 3 years. The company convinced me to stay on as a marketing analyst for 3 days a week for the reduced salary of $M. I was making $L working as a communications director for my non-profit employer. I sacrificed pay because of my belief in the mission to support cancer research. In comparing communications director positions in the for profit sector in our region, I noticed that salaries were about 20% higher.

Make Friends and Build Relationships at Work - The Muse

Make Friends and Build Relationships at Work - The Muse Make Friends and Build Relationships at Work Research shows that having meaningful relationships at work is one of the most important factors of job satisfaction and overall well-being. So, the more proactive you are in building relationships at work- with colleagues, clients, mentors, and managers- the better off you’ll be both personally and professionally. So, how do you do it? The first step to creating meaningful relationships is to reflect on and appreciate the ones you already have. Take a moment- right now- to think about which relationship at work gives you the greatest sense of purpose. It could be with your boss, a team member, or even that guy you chat with in the elevator every morning. Who inspires you? Who gives you energy? Have your person in mind? Great. Now here comes the hard part: Let him or her know it. Send an email or a handwritten note, or, if you’re comfortable doing so, stop by this co-worker’s desk. While emoting our appreciation for someone can be a squirm-worthy exercise, it’s worth it: More often than not the people we care about most don’t have a clue how important they are to us and our well-being. Letting them know will not only deepen your relationships, but also increase their sense of purpose by showing them the positive impact they’ve had on you. And that’s a pretty powerful feeling. From there, try reaching out to others in your professional network. Here are more tried and true ways to foster meaningful relationships at work- some oldies, some you might not have thought of before, but all worth considering. 1. Track Names You will meet a lot of new people throughout your career, especially when changing jobs or seeking out new networks. As you meet new contacts, write down their names and a few things that stood out to you about them. Follow up with people who you would like to get to know better or who are in positions that interest you. Being the one to first reach out and mentioning something you remember from your initial conversation gives a strong first impression and will help you build relationships quickly. 2. Find Energy Sources Make a list of the people in your organization who give you energy when you meet with them, and seek out opportunities to work with them, whether it’s officially on an inter-departmental committee or more informally, like asking them for advice. When you do, be conscious of what it is about them that makes you want to work together, and share this with them. 3. Get Coffee. Then Get More Coffee Make a list of people you’d like to get to know better, then set up coffee with one person per day for a month. Spend the time understanding what they love about their work. If you’re new on the job, this is an easy way to meet people within your organization- but even if you’re not, it’s a great way to build closer relationships. Oh, and be sure to pay! 4. Be Present Ask yourself “What do my colleagues/managers/clients need from me today?” and then make it happen. Whether you offer new insights, head up a task, or simply lend support to your co-worker who has more than her share on her plate, small gestures can cause big ripples. Which leads me to… 5. Put Down the *%# iPhone! We get it. You have a million things on your plate, and your mind is already on the next four conference calls you have to get through today. But being fully present in every meeting and conversation will show people they are respected and deserving of your full attention. (Don’t believe me? This writer spent a week putting away her phone when she was around other people- and the results were amazing.) 6. Be a Mentor Find someone you might mentor, and take her to lunch to learn about her dreams and aspirations. You don’t have to be an executive or even a manager- many mentoring relationships are peer to peer. To start, find what creates meaningful impact for you at work through a purpose assessment, then ask your mentee to do the same. Those who share your purpose see the world like you do, and those relationships can generate useful collaboration and deeper connection. 7. Seek Advice and New Knowledge Ask someone for advice or information, and then follow up on it immediately. Show him or her you are someone worth investing in, as you will act on advice and are eager to learn. 8. Celebrate Others Find a way to publicly celebrate the work of someone else on your team. It doesn’t have to be fireworks; it can just be a comment in a meeting or an email to the team. Recognizing your colleagues for the contributions they make, big and small, not only makes them feel appreciated, but also inspires others to create a culture of support and positivity feedback. 9. End the Day on the Right Note At the end of each day, share with someone what you enjoyed from the day. What inspired you? What challenged you? What made you smile? Initiating these conversations can help your colleagues get to know you better and reflect on their own personal growth as well. Forming connections today can help you in ways you might not even imagine right now. Invest in connecting with the people around you, and you invest in your own career and well-being. And who knows, you might just make a friend, or a dozen, along the way. Photo of people talking courtesy of Shutterstock.

Social Media Job Titles

Social Media Job Titles Social Media Job Titles A new field of human endeavor has been created thanks to social media. If you go to work in this new field, you will likely find yourself managing social media accounts across multiple platforms, planning publicity campaigns that will be marketed through social media platforms, or producing online content that has an interactive component. Since social media is a new field, there are evolving standards, technical certifications, and licensing requirements. If youre new to this area, it might be difficult to find out what the job really consists of or what will be expected of you. You can begin your job hunt by  looking for keywords  like digital content, digital media, online content, online community, social marketing, engagement, interactive, and just online or social media in general. What’s In A Name? Although non-standard job titles can be confusing at first, creative titles do give you valuable information about a prospective employer. A company hiring for positions called social media guru, interactive media czar, digital media ninja, content swami, or brand evangelist suggest the position is for someone with experience who likes to experiment creatively. The staff may be crafting an image in order to attract applicants who have a playful nature and a creative, or even iconic attitude. If you are put off by being called a maven or a rock star, you probably wont be a good fit for that  companys culture  or its mission. Because of the new, open-ended nature of the field, even traditional-sounding titles may not tell you very much about the job itself. It may be difficult at first glance to know whether you’ll be coordinating other staff or if you’ll be the only social media employee. Thus, it is important to make sure you ask the employer about the job tasks and be sure you are comfortable with the response. Three Top Social Media Job Titles Director of Social Media.    Director is a fairly high-level title, and if this is the job youre hired for, its likely that youll be responsible  for strategy, and possibly managing other people. You will probably be in charge of posting to social media accounts on several platforms, according to a set schedule. You may or may not be responsible for creating those accounts and the posting schedule. You may be responsible for creating content or overseeing editors in creating a content calendar. You may also write for, or oversee, a blog. You might be responsible for creating your companys “voice” and social media personality. You will likely be expected to know more about social media than your supervisor does. Other likely titles for the same job include director or manager of social media marketing, director or manager of social media communication, director or manager of social media relations, or director or manager  of social media strategy. Brand Manager.  As a brand manager or brand ambassador, you might also be posting to a group of social media accounts (with or without a blog), but its more likely youll be directly involved in advertising. Rather than managing communications directly, your team might be more involved in the sales and marketing aspect of social media. The job titles of content manager or content strategist might also be used for this kind of position. Engagement Coordinator. If youre an engagement coordinator (or manager), you will not only be in charge of your company’s social media messaging, you’ll also be responsible for guiding the online behavior of the public. You will be executing (and possibly creating) a marketing strategy that involves getting the public to respond to posts, share posts, or re-tweet your posts- with the hope of it going viral. You might also be called the director  of community, interactive media associate (or coordinator, or manager), or internet marketing manager. KPIs. In each of these jobs and generally any social media position you may have, you will typically be responsible for managing key performance indicators (KPIs). KPIs can vary greatly depending on the job and its goals. KPI management can involve dashboards, views, re-tweets, shares, sales goals, and more. In some jobs you may also have the responsibility for managing a KPI budget which can include paid options for social media marketing and analysis of the monetary benefits. Common Social Media Job Titles You May Encounter Each title below comes with different duties and responsibilities based on the company. You can look up the employer on LinkedIn to see if the job already exists or to get a sense of what it might involve in comparison to other current roles. How will you find your next job Networking, probably

How will you find your next job Networking, probably How will you find your next job Networking, probably How will you find your next job? 41 million Americans will be looking for a new job this year, and there are myriad ways to find one â€" by searching job boards, employer websites, through a recruiter, through networking or a friend, a headhunter, job events, social media, and more. Most job-searchers undoubtedly do some of each to cover all the bases.A recent survey of 1,535 US adults asking them how they landed their latest job, by marketing research and polling firm  CivicScience, found that found that traditional wisdom prevailed: it’s all about the personal connection. More people found a job through networking or “knowing someone” that they did through job boards, job fairs, Linked, headhunters, or any other method.Thirty-one percent of respondents said they found their most recent job through networking, while only 11% used an online job board.   23% answered   “other,” which could mean applying in person, especially in the case of service jobs. Some other findings: Certain industries are more conducive to networking than others. Workers in sales/operations are social butterflies: 47% of those in that industry found their current job through networking, and 44% of people in tech did as well. Compare that to service work, where only 15%   found their most recent job through their network. Millennials are better at getting jobs through job boards: 17% of Millennial found their most recent job via a job board. Only 9% of Gen Xers and 7% of Baby Boomers did. The more (money) the merrier: people making over $100,000 per year are the least likely to have found their latest job through a job board or employer website, perhaps because they have access to a stronger network and other opportunities. Indeed, 35% found their most recent job through their network than lower income brackets. Only 27% of people making $50K found their last job through networking but are likelier to have found a job through a job board or website. So keep your network strong, even when you’re not looking â€" you’ll be glad when you do need to use it.

One behavior separates the successful from the average

One behavior separates the successful from the average One behavior separates the successful from the average A certain farmer had become old and ready to pass his farm down to one of his two sons. When he brought his sons together to speak about it, he told them:  The farm will go to the younger son.The older son was furious!  â€œWhat are you talking about?!”  he fumed. The father sat patiently, thinking.“Okay,”  the father said,  â€œI need you to do something for me. We need more stocks. Will you go to Cibi’s farm and see if he has any cows for sale?”The older son shortly returned and reported,  â€œFather, Cibi has 6 cows for sale.”The father graciously thanked the older son for his work. He then turned to the younger son and said,  â€œI need you to do something for me. We need more stocks. Will you go to Cibi’s farm and see if he has any cows for sale?”The younger son did as he was asked. A short while later, he returned and reported,  â€œFather, Cibi has 6 cows for sale. Each cow will cost 2,000 rupees. If we are thinking about buying more than 6 cows, Cibi said he would b e willing to reduce the price 100 rupees. Cibi also said they are getting special jersey cows next week if we aren’t in a hurry, it may be good to wait. However, if we need the cows urgently, Cibi said he could deliver the cows tomorrow.”The father graciously thanked the younger son for his work. He then turned to the older son and said,  â€œThat’s why your younger brother is getting the farm.”Successful People InitiateMost people only do what they are asked, doing only the minimum requirement. They need specific instructions on most things they do.Conversely, those who become successful are anxiously engaged in a good cause. They don’t need to be managed in all things. They don’t just do the job, they do it right and complete. They also influence the direction for how certain ideas and projects go.Most importantly, those who become successful initiate. They reach out to people, ask questions, make recommendations, offer to help, and pitch their ideas.Being successful re quires being proactive and not waiting for life to come to you. It means you’re on offense, not defense. You’re active, not passive. In every organization, there are a select few employees who would be difficult to replace. For the most part, most people are like the older son in the story. Most people could be easily replaced. Most people are passive and reactive. They require specific instructions. They need to be governed and managed in all things.Initiation always involves some degree of risk. You’re putting yourself out there and there is a chance you could fail.Conversely, doing only what you’re told entails no risk and carries no responsibility. It’s playing safe.ConclusionAre you an initiator? You absolutely can be.But if not, one thing is for certain: Life isn’t going to wait for you. This article originally appeared on Medium.

The Best Confidence Boosting Tips Out There - The Muse

The Best Confidence Boosting Tips Out There - The Muse The Best Confidence Boosting Tips Out There It seems like everyone wants to talk about women and confidence lately. From “The Confidence Gap,” by Katty Kay and Claire Shipman: ...there is a particular crisis for women- a vast confidence gap that separates the sexes. Compared with men, women don’t consider themselves as ready for promotions, they predict they’ll do worse on tests, and they generally underestimate their abilities. This disparity stems from factors ranging from upbringing to biology. The article and Kay and Shipman’s book are not without their critics. And in my opinion, their solution is even worse. As reported by Jessica Valenti: “telling women to meditate, ‘be grateful,’ sit up straight, and get good sleep.” I know gratitude is really trendy, but I’m not on board- feeling grateful is a nice strategy when you can’t change your situation. If you live in a totalitarian society or have a terminal illness, being grateful for what you have is the best you can do. If you have the ability to change your life, instead try cultivating a flame of righteous fury. I’m very confident and have been since some magical day when I was about 27 and realized I had been feeling calm, unshakeable, dignified, and bemused by most problems for some time. I wasn’t born this way. When I was a child, my parents were frequently called in to school for parent-teacher conferences on the topic, “Jennifer is too sensitive.” But at some point, that changed, and it’s been balls-out ever since. Not a lot really shakes me. (I like the expression “balls-out,” because doing anything with your balls out, if you have balls, makes you look ridiculous and also makes you extremely vulnerable to basically everything, including not just tigers and bears but also table corners.) How did I get so confident? And how can you do it, too? I think a lot of people have the causality backwards. I didn’t force myself to be confident and then become successful as a result; I worked on quantifiable hard skills until I was making good money, and then I discovered I felt very confident. I hadn’t realized until then that a huge component of how I interacted with the world was colored by my lack of money and the vulnerability this comes with that. Here are some ideas for improving your confidence. The overarching principles, though? Detoxify yourself from the patriarchy, and build undeniable, quantifiable hard skills. 1. Quantify Everything There is an enormous difference between saying you increase your clients’ sales by an average of 18% or have a perfect 170/170 on the GRE or type 325 words per minute and saying you’re “an expert on personal branding” or “good with people.” The former are quantifiable; the latter are things that people with no valuable skills whatsoever put on their resumes to pad them out. Sure, you might be way better than those people- but can you prove it? Quantify everything. You write the company’s email newsletters? Great, how many did you write in 2014, what was the open rate, what was the click-through rate, what percent converted to sales, and how do those numbers compare with your predecessor’s performance in 2013? You’re an artist? How many people viewed your work in that gallery? By what percent has the sale price of your paintings increased? You really are an expert in personal branding? How many people attended your seminars, and what percent of them gave you a positive rating? Do you work in an environment where people are likely to be biased against you? (Are you not a white, able-bodied, heterosexual, cis man?) Numbers are your friend. Develop skills you can quantify, and then work to improve those numbers. Become undeniable. (See also: 6 Ways to Quantify Your Code, Tech Skills Are Not Optional for Your Career, and How to Quantify Your Resume Bullets (When You Don’t Work With Numbers).) 2. Put Money First Women hear a lot more “do what you love” rhetoric than men do. A lot of men didn’t do what they love because they knew they wanted a family someday, and they needed to make money. Even though most women will be breadwinners at some point in their lives, few women make the same calculations. And while there are some men out there who are engineers when they wish they could’ve been artists, I have personally met more than one woman artist who struggled during a STEM degree and- instead of getting motivation and help- was told, “Oh, it’s okay, science is hard. Don’t you like art?” Besides, most people don’t know exactly what they love. Job descriptions change constantly, and new jobs come into being with new technologies. Sometimes you don’t love something until you’re good at it. Sometimes you love something because other people worship you for it. That’s legit, and it’s a good way to get paid- and feel great about what you do. On the same note, save up an emergency fund- anywhere from three to 24 months of living expenses. When I was living paycheck-to-paycheck, I didn’t realize how vulnerable I felt all the time. If I got sick, I could bankrupt myself on healthcare. Even if I just twisted my ankle and decided to forgo medical care, a $27 cab ride home hurt more than the ankle. Ever stay in a bad relationship because you couldn’t afford to move out or worry that one social event somewhere fancy will leave you without money to pay rent? A fat emergency fund will do loads for your confidence. 3. Take Focus Off Your Appearance Or rather, take the focus off looking pretty, sexy, beautiful, and the like. (And don’t try to look thinner, either, if that’s something you normally do.) Take at least a temporary detox from often-oppressive beauty standards. What would that look like? The opposite of trying to look beautiful is not necessarily becoming a slob. What would it be like to put time, effort, thought, and money into your appearance- with no thought whatsoever to looking attractive to men (or better than other women)? Would you try to look empathetic? Smart? Dignified? Wise? Rich? Commanding? Intimidating? Vibrant? Dynamic? What would that look like? Would it improve your career? Would you be happier? Maybe- more confident? I remember one day I was getting dressed to go teach a GMAT class. I was running late and yet had thrown on one of those fabulous office dresses that looks odd- like your face doesn’t match your body- without at least a dash of makeup. I looked at the clock and thought: No one cares how good-looking their GMAT instructor is. If anyone cares at all, they probably want their GMAT instructor to look smart and empathetic. I threw on a men’s-style collared shirt and some kind of pants (I assume) and dashed off to class. Sometimes a pencil behind the ear is the right accessory. If you already live this way, great! If not, try it for a week. You may not have clocked just how many decisions you make based on the idea that women should try to be beautiful at all times. Have you even compromised your “personal brand,” as they say, by trying to look pretty instead of trying to project the qualities important to your career? 4. Cultivate a Healthy Relationship With Aging Do you have friends over 50? Mentors? Role models? Get some. I’ve heard young women say that they have to be successful while they’re “still hot,” or else it “won’t count.” Look, we’re all humans and we’re all mortal. We’re in that together. You don’t need to live by some other, terrible ticking clock that lessens your value as a person year by year. You may not realize that you have this attitude, but in a culture that lionizes youth, it’s easy for it to be embedded in you and to be living with a constant, low-level fear of aging without even realizing it. Is your greatest hope for your 60s that it’ll be some pale imitation of your 30s, where you haven’t lost everything? Or do you just avoid ever thinking about it? Try reading magazines like MORE or O Magazine that are intended for much older women. ADULT magazine (“adult” as in NSFW) has a series called “Adult of the Week” (“adult” as in “over a certain age”). And check out the “Advanced Style” blog. Fall in love a little with your future 60-year-old self. And do everything in your power- plan, save, hustle, negotiate for more- to set her up with resources and choices. 5. Put Overconfident Idiots in Their Place Finally, consider that the gap between where you are now and where you want to be, confidence-wise, may not be as large as you would assume. This is because, as Amanda Hess writes, “know-nothing sociopaths rule the business world.” That is, being “confident” can mean being calm, content, competent, and having a rationally grounded belief in your own, actual, demonstrable skills and abilities. It doesn’t mean being an arrogant blowhard. Quoth Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic in the Harvard Business Review: ...there is no denying that women’s path to leadership positions is paved with many barriers including a very thick glass ceiling. But a much bigger problem is the lack of career obstacles for incompetent men. Instead of being intimidated by very confident people, examine whether they are overconfident and you are just fine. Is someone substituting his tallness and loudness and maleness and social obliviousness for competence and skill? Practice looking amused whenever someone does this. Smile condescendingly. Say something like, “You sound very confident, but we haven’t seen any data.” Or, “I admire your confidence, but let’s address the underlying assumptions.” Say it as though you are talking to a toddler who has told you he is going to grow up to be Superman, or a fire truck. (See also: How to (Effectively) Be a Feminist in the Workplace.) Finally, Chamorro-Premuzic reports that “leaderless groups have a natural tendency to elect self-centered, overconfident and narcissistic individuals as leaders,” and “these personality characteristics are not equally common in men and women.” So take charge of any leaderless group- possibly by appointing yourself leader, or by nominating another woman, or by suggesting a roster of responsibilities and meeting facilitation, or by drawing up a list of leadership tasks and suggesting that everyone volunteer for a few. Maybe you do not have a confidence problem. Maybe you are just fine and you are surrounded by overconfident assholes. That doesn’t mean do nothing. That means speaking up for rationality, sanity, and quiet people with something to contribute. Photo of woman working courtesy of Shutterstock.
